The philosophy of Osteopathy primarily focuses on the relationship between structure and function within the human biomechanical system. The interrelationship and interdependence of this relationship is fundamental to our health. Malocculsion has the propensity to disrupt the entire postural biomechanical relationship, equally if the structure of any part of the body is in a state of dis-ease or poor function it has potential implications to the occlusive relationship.

Dysfunctional patterns within the physical body may be imposed from a variety of sources, these may include trauma, both physical and emotive, repetitive strain, disease processes and environmental factors. Body memory patterns are instrumental in maintaining these strains which often manifest with pain. Osteopathic concepts and principles indicate that identifying the tissues holding the memory of abnormality is essential to potentiating a resolution so that the body can self correct and return to a normal homeostatic state.

Working with Richard Dean for the last eight years, we have endeavoured to address the thorny issue of malocclusive disruption coupled with head and neck pain, attempting to integrate Osteopathic principles and concepts within the framework of orthopaedic dentistry. Using these principles, the overriding indication is that the entire structure and function of the body  has to be assessed and normalised to achieve stability to the occlusive plane.

TMD is often found to be of primary significance in many of the pain patterns presenting to us. The complexity of the joint and the structures with direct relationship to it cannot be underestimated, indeed the volumes of publications testify to the great debate that continues to be discussed. Our integrated Osteopathic and Orthopaedic dental approach concentrates on stabalising tissues and reducing pain before any postural or occlusive changes are attempted. Rational for this conservative approach comes from both empirical evidence relating to efficacy of results and more importantly concepts of reversible treatment.
